Well, not exactly. It's a common misconception because it sounds quite like a theremin, but it is actually a Tannerin, which is an electronic slide instrument. The Beach Boys used it on a few songs.

that is pretty cool. I guess in the case of the Beach Boys 'theremin like' got taken to be theremin but as this article clearly points out this is a different instrument/sound platform namely Tannerin.
